5 Tips To Avoid Back & Neck Pain At Work
Far too many desk workers experience pain and stiffness by the end of their shift. Practicing good posture and using the right equipment can help you avoid this pain. Our Clermont chiropractor, Dr. Adrian Williams, provides a five-point posture checklist when working at your computer so you can avoid back and neck pain.
Optimize Your Screen Position
Your head and neck are designed to look ahead, not upwards or downwards for hours on end. That tilt is a major workout for your neck muscles trying to hold up a ten-pound head for eight hours a day. You can eliminate that by positioning your screen so you don’t have to look up or down while working.
Get the Right Chair
Computer chairs have become quite technical to improve posture and optimize productivity. If you have a chair that makes it easy to slouch, then that could be one reason why you’re experiencing neck or back pain. Find a computer chair that feels comfortable while helping you sit upright with your feet flat on the floor and knees at a 90-degree angle.
Get in the Habit of Healthy Posture
A good chair and computer screen position will only go so far if you’re practicing bad posture. Good posture means having a straight back, avoiding rounding your shoulders, feet flat on the floor, and knees bent at a 90-degree angle. Dr. Williams can evaluate your posture and help you correct it.
Minimize Stress
Stress has a nasty habit of making your body tight. Tight muscles restrict blood flow and can pull on your spine, triggering neck and back pain. It’s not always possible to keep stress levels to a low simmer. When you need a little help, come see Dr. Williams for a chiropractic adjustment or some physiotherapy to loosen your body up and destress.
Take Regular Breaks
Regular breaks help keep the blood flowing and stave off stiffness. If you’re able to make the time for it, Dr. Williams can build you a brief stretching routine to further protect you from back pain, neck pain, and stiffness.
